Third generation (3G) phones offer a wide range of features with more features. When consumers get the latest and better features from their communication devices, they continue to demand longer working hours and smaller form factor from a single battery. Although IC integration can help solve the problem of equipment size, it also increases the design complexity and limits the design flexibility. Today's mobile phone designers have to consider a variety of factors to extend battery life by effectively optimizing battery power usage. Therefore, it is necessary to combine a variety of high integrated power management units and high-performance discrete components to solve the problems of battery management, power conservation and system management.
For wireless handset manufacturers, the new connectivity requirements not only pose challenges but also bring business opportunities. The first challenge is to find a way of data transmission between mobile phones fast enough to transfer large music and video files in a reasonable time, while still maintaining the quality of voice communication between their mobile phones. At the same time, creating a new mode that combines mobile phones with seamless personal domain network will also bring huge business opportunities to wireless handset manufacturers.
In the past few years, Bluetooth technology has become the most important short interval wireless technology in the market. This technology is mainly used as a link between handheld terminals, but more and more PCs, MP3 players and digital cameras are also using this technology.
However, as we all know, when Bluetooth technology is in the development stage, the memory and data storage capacity of mobile phone is still relatively low, and it does not have the ability to capture still images and video clips. Therefore, the design of Bluetooth does not take into account the integration of tens or even hundreds of megabytes of memory in the standard size of wireless handheld terminals. It is only used for voice calling and relatively small data files to achieve low cost, low power consumption, high-quality transmission of ad hoc network. Even if the maximum transmission rate of 1-3mbps specified in the new EDR standard is adopted, Bluetooth still needs a long time for users to transmit large files saved in the new mobile phone with the highest storage capacity.
At the beginning of May, the Bluetooth SIG, which is composed of more than 3400 promoters, related companies and member companies, made a significant breakthrough in the battle to overcome the limitation of the technology's transmission speed. SIG announced an alliance with wireless ultra wideband (UWB) developers. The move was supported by Wimedia, an organization recently merged with the multi band OFDM Alliance (MBOA), with Ti, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung and Sony as its primary supporters. The marriage of Bluetooth SIG and UWB aims to combine the Bluetooth verified application layer and authentication program with the transmission rate of 200Mbps or higher per second of UWB.
When announcing the alliance news, Bluetooth SIG also acknowledged that there are still many problems to be solved before realizing the "happy marriage" between Bluetooth and UWB, such as the potential interference from WLAN, WiMAX and new mobile band, and the lack of global spectrum allocation of UWB, etc. However, it is believed that these problems will be solved soon. With Bluetooth / UWB technology, users can easily and quickly transfer files between mobile phones and other devices, and consumers do not have to wait anxiously.
Future development
However, the key is that Bluetooth and UWB still haven't completely solved the problem of market center. An obvious trend is that personal computers will become the first comprehensive and the same platform to adopt UWB, including its related peripherals. This is worth reading, because in the past, PC was the main focus of various digital devices in the market (the other is mobile phone). For other market areas that are considering adopting UWB, no matter how wonderful Bluetooth / UWB is, the combination will still face the embarrassment of marginalization before merging into the popular desktop computer.
For PC, the recently widely supported UWB protocol as a high-speed and short interval wireless connection standard in PC is the wireless USB over UWB / Wimedia based on UWB / Wimedia. Based on the success of USB2.0 (speed up to 480 mPBS per second), WUSB with the same speed is the natural development direction of wired USB widely used in PC. Due to the elimination of cables and connectors between devices, WUSB improves value. With the continuous application of various USB connectors (including standard and special connectors), this is a powerful value orientation. WUSB promotion organizations led by Intel, Ti, NEC, Philips and other manufacturers have committed to use Wimedia / MBOA standard as the basis of the application.
For mobile phone manufacturers and Bluetooth SIG, the expected popularity speed of WUSB in PC puts them in an awkward position. On the one hand, in order to meet the transmission speed requirements of new wireless hardware, mobile phone OEM manufacturers hope to add to the trend of WUSB update. On the other hand, major mobile phone manufacturers have invested a lot of money and time in the design and development of mobile phones and applications relying on Bluetooth technology. They believe that Bluetooth is a mature and reliable connection solution. They also know that 250 million users are using terminal devices with built-in Bluetooth technology, and they know the working mode and user interface of Bluetooth at their fingertips.
New choice
Mobile phone manufacturers think that WUSB and Bluetooth are either or choices. This traditional way of thinking has largely created its embarrassing situation today. In this way of thinking, if we integrate Bluetooth and UWB into mobile phones, we can realize high-speed connection from OEM manufacturers.
